We Energies is warning customers to be on the lookout for a new type of utility scam and providing simple tips to avoid becoming a victim.
The scam works like this:
- Customers go to a search engine to find the phone number for their utility. The top search result may show up as a sponsored post with a phone number to call.
- Customers who call the number think they are talking to We Energies, but instead are providing sensitive information to scammers. Customers have reported that they have been asked for credit card information and Social Security numbers.
Customers can avoid falling victim by:
- Instead of using a search engine, customers can find We Energies contact information on the company’s website, app or utility bill.
We Energies is warning customers of a new phishing tool. The energy giant said dozens of customers have reported fake numbers and websites who have people pretending to be We Energies employees. Instead, their information is getting stolen. https://t.co/CO6pf7o83u
