Our equipment and power plants are designed to withstand some of the harshest conditions in the Midwest. During the recent cold snap, our system performed exactly as it should — reliable and resilient. We did not experience any large-scale electric outages, a testament to the strength of our infrastructure and planning.
Crews working around the clock
In the field, our electric and natural gas crews worked tirelessly to keep energy flowing. To keep everyone safe, we sent extra crews to major work locations, allowing employees to rotate into heated vehicles and take frequent warm-up breaks. Many customers took a moment to thank our crews — and we truly appreciate every word of support.
Fueling reliability with natural gas
On the natural gas side, we used our underground storage and new liquefied natural gas (LNG) facilities to ensure a steady, reliable supply of fuel. Our employees worked around the clock to manage deliveries, monitor system pressures and keep customers comfortable through the coldest nights.
Powering through with a diverse energy mix
Throughout the event, all of our power plants were called upon to meet higher energy demand. This is why we maintain a diverse energy portfolio — combining coal, natural gas, solar, wind and battery storage.
When wind turbines across the Midwest temporarily paused in subzero temperatures, our quick-start natural gas plants and battery systems stepped in to deliver reliable power when customers needed it most.
