We Energies interns showcased their talents during the 2025 Light the Hoan Intern Challenge. The group took one of the top spots in the People’s Choice competition.

This year’s Light the Hoan Intern Challenge featured 14 teams from leading companies in the Milwaukee area. Each team was tasked with designing and programming an original light display on the Milwaukee Hoan Bridge.

The light shows were played live, and people were asked to vote on the most dazzling show. The We Energies show took runner-up in the People’s Choice voting and sixth in the celebrity judging.

The We Energies team was made up of four talented students: information technology interns Sidney Heberlein and Michael Kiem, power generation intern Michael Friese, and electric distribution asset management intern Neham Rahman. Their light show reflected the We Energies brand, culture and values, and demonstrated how We Energies has powered Milwaukee’s growth since 1896.

Their design:

  • Incorporated colors inspired by the city’s “People’s Flag.”
  • Highlighted how We Energies powers local industry and iconic events, such as Summerfest, Brewers baseball and Bucks basketball, and how the company’s lighting serves as a community beacon.
  • Featured the flapping of a monarch butterfly’s wings — symbolizing the company’s continuous adaptation and growth alongside the city, while maintaining its commitment to sustainability and powering the area’s bright future.

The We Energies Foundation is the proud presenting sponsor of this event and has supported Light the Hoan and the intern challenge through grants since the collective’s inception in 2018.
